Go on your own ‘foodie adventure’. BunGeo is quite literally about going back to the roots. It’s about getting out into the Geographe landscape to forage for the best and freshest ingredients.
Take a drive through the Donnybrook – Balingup region and you’ll find an array of farmers selling produce roadside or from their farm packhouse. Produce varies – in summer, purchase strawberries, sweet stone fruits including cherries, apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines.
From June to October, the home of the Big Orange, Harvey, is bursting with farms selling oranges or mandarins roadside. The region’s loamy soils and availability of quality water allow growers to produce great eating quality citrus for West Australian families to enjoy. The Pergoliti family from Harvey Citrus are one of the biggest producers in the state, growing Late Season Navels, Imperial, Hickson, Afourer and Mystique Mandarins, Rio Red Grapefruit, Midknight Valencias and Limes.
If you can’t make it to a farm gate, Bunbury Farmers Markets just off Forrest Hwy is the place to go. This place is legendary; so much so, many Perth ‘golden-triangle’ residents travel the two-hour drive to shop and Masterchef Guy Grossi (above – image sourced @guygrossi) drops in when visiting WA. The produce here – much of it sourced from surrounding farms and suppliers – is mostly organic and explodes with flavour. The Fruit Barn in Donnybrook and Stratham’s Forbidden Fruit are two other fab produce places to stop.
