Australia is represented by many symbols, such as the flags, the kangaroo, the wattle, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Uluru. Some symbols endure; others fade away, and new ones emerge as attitudes and values change. Inspired by the National Museum of Australia’s collection, this exhibition explores some of the symbols that define Australia and its people.
Defining Symbols of Australia examines the history, meanings, and significance of eight iconic symbols. The exhibition showcases elements of Bunbury’s local history within the broader context of national representation and identity, offering a starting point for conversations about what it means to be Australian.
